Packing choice affects handling cost, retail flexibility, warehouse efficiency and overall distribution economics once your Basmati shipment lands anywhere in the GCC. It's a decision buyers sometimes treat as an afterthought, but getting it wrong means either paying for handling capacity you don't need or struggling with bags too heavy for your team and equipment. Here's how to choose between the two most common export formats — and the less common ones worth knowing about.
25 KG Bags
25 KG bags are the most common format for wholesale-to-retail distribution across the region. They are easier for smaller shops, supermarkets and mid-size distributors to handle, stack and resell without additional repacking. This is typically the preferred format for buyers supplying grocery and retail channels across Jeddah, Dammam, Riyadh, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait City, Muscat and Manama alike — the format works the same way regardless of which GCC retail market you're serving.
40 KG Bags
40 KG bags are more common with foodservice buyers, large-volume distributors and bulk caterers who handle rice in larger units and have the warehouse and handling equipment to manage heavier bags efficiently. Per-MT logistics cost is often marginally lower with 40 KG packing due to fewer bags per shipment — fewer units to load, unload, count and store means lower handling labor cost per ton, which matters at scale for large institutional or hospitality-sector buyers across the Gulf.
Bag Material: PP vs Jute
- PP (polypropylene) woven bags — the standard for most export shipments; moisture-resistant, cost-effective, and widely accepted across every GCC market. This is the default choice for the vast majority of our shipments.
- Jute bags — sometimes requested for specific buyer or regional preference, particularly where a more traditional or premium presentation is wanted; breathable but generally used less than PP in modern bulk export due to higher cost and lower moisture resistance during long sea transits.
Plain vs Printed / Branded Packing
Buyers repacking for their own retail brand typically order plain bags for private-label repacking at destination — common among UAE and Saudi distributors building their own brand identity. Buyers reselling under the exporter's or a joint brand may request printed bags — this should be agreed and confirmed at the quotation stage since custom printing adds production lead time, typically an additional one to two weeks depending on design complexity and order volume.
Bag Sizing Beyond 25kg and 40kg
While 25 KG and 40 KG cover the large majority of GCC orders, some buyers — particularly larger institutional caterers or bulk retail chains — request 50 KG bags for maximum handling efficiency, or smaller 5-10 KG consumer-facing retail packs for supermarket shelf placement. These are available on request but typically require longer lead times and higher minimum order quantities due to specialized packing line setup.
Matching Packing to Your Business Model
| Buyer Type | Typical Packing | Common Across |
|---|---|---|
| Retail / grocery distributor | 25 KG PP bags | Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar |
| Foodservice / catering | 40 KG PP bags | All GCC markets |
| Private-label repacker | 25 KG plain bags | UAE, Saudi Arabia |
| Large institutional buyer | 50 KG (on request) | Kuwait, Qatar, Oman |
Container Loading Efficiency by Bag Size
Bag size also affects how efficiently a container loads. Larger 40 KG bags generally allow slightly better space utilization per container due to fewer gaps between units, though the difference is usually marginal (typically 1-3% of total container capacity) and rarely a deciding factor on its own — packing choice should primarily follow your downstream handling and distribution needs, not container math.
